More than anywhere else Siena embodies the aspect of a medieval city. With its yellowish – brown buildings (from
witch the colour “sienna” is named) and encircled by massive ramparts the city extend over three converging clay hills at the very heart of the high Tuscan plateau. As a centre for the arts, Siena is an enticing maze of narrows streets, lined with tall palaces and patricians mansion, which come
together on the famous Piazza del Campo.
Legend says that Siena was founded by Senio and Ascanio, sons of Remus, of the famous duo Romulus and Remus who founded Rome. This
explain the presence of the senese emblem of the twin (Romulus and Remus) being suckled by the she-wolf. In the 12th C. Siena become an
independent republic. Having prospered through its merchant who were famous throughout Europe and through its bankers, it became a threat to neighbouring Florence. At the same time political rivalry was rife between the two cities, Siena being a supporter of the Ghibelline faction while Florence supported the Guelf. The history of the cathedral is complex. The present building was begun in the middle of 12th C. but was not completed until in the 14th C. when Siena was at the height of its prosperity. The citizen decided to create a much larger church in honour oft he Virgin Mary, a cathedral which would be larger than the one in the rival city of Florence. The work begun in 1339 and was proceeding with great speed when it was suddenly interrupted in 1348 by the plague. In the last quarter of 14th C. work began on the completion of the cathedral. The Campo is one of the most famous square in the world and the harmony of its buildings has rarely if ever been surpassed. In the mid of 14th C. the square was paved with bricks within an outer circle of cobblestones. On the southeast side, also in brick and stone, is the long facade of the Palazzo Pubblico. From its centre radiate eight white lines dividing the Campo into nine sections which symbolize the governament of the nine magistrates from among the " craftsmen, traders, bankers who brought the city its greatest period of prosperity.
